Tekno Granite SA (Pty) Ltd, was founded
mid-1998, however, it only commenced escalating
its operations during 2002 and although it is one of our recently
formed, Companies within the Marble Classic Group it
nonetheless acts as a portal to the introduction of natural
stone and our first steps towards the beneficiation of
granite.
Granite is our livelihood, not
only for Tekno Granite SA (Pty) Ltd, but also, to our entire Group
of Companies; we are passionate about our natural stone and feel
that Southern African granites have some of the most
exotic and magnificent colours of granites available and
sought-after worldwide.
Briefly, granite is possibly the most common, of igneous
rock type known to the general public, and 'granite' is named for
its' rather medium to course 'granular' texture. Granite is created
when crystals of granite are formed while the molten material
inside the Earth's crust cools relatively slowly. It can be pink to
dark gray or even black depending on their chemistry and
mineralogy. The minerals that are found in granite are primarily
quartz, plagioclase feldspars, potassium of K-feldspars, hornblende
and micas. Quartz is usually the last mineral to crystallize and
fills in the extra space between the other minerals; quartz's
hardness, lack of chemical reactivity and near lack of cleavage
give granite a significant amount of its desirable durable
properties.
Granite forms a major part of the continental crust, and
is the most abundant basement rock that underlies the relatively
thin sedimentary veneer of the continents.
Granite is a rock that has been used for centuries for
many different purposes such as building material. Its durability,
beauty and abundance make it a preferred choice of stone over most
others. Granite has been extensively used for flooring such as
tiles; cladding in cut to size applications using different
formats; in public and commercial buildings and
monuments.
Furthermore, with the increasing amounts of acid rain in
parts of the world, granite has begun to supplant marble as a
monument material, since it is much more durable.
Polished granite is also a popular choice for kitchen
countertops due to its high durability and aesthetic
qualities.
